Bemidji, Minnesota, Named Finalist for Hallmark Christmas Town

Picture a snowy lakeside downtown, a parade glowing with holiday lights and a giant blue ox waiting to greet visitors. It sounds like the opening scene of a Hallmark Christmas movie, but it’s also a pretty good description of Bemidji, Minnesota. The city was the only Minnesota finalist in the Hallmark Channel’s Merriest Christmas Towns Contest, joining 24 other communities hoping to become the setting for a future holiday film. Whether or not a camera crew ever arrives, Bemidji already knows how to put on a Christmas show.

Why Bemidji Caught Hallmark’s Eye

Hallmark asked voters to choose the town that best captured the heart and magic of the holiday season. Voting ran from mid-August through September 4, with Bemidji competing against destinations across the country, from Cape May, New Jersey, to Leavenworth, Washington.

Bemidji’s pitch goes well beyond having enough snow for a convincing winter scene. Downtown has shops, restaurants and lake views, while the holiday calendar gives residents and visitors plenty of reasons to gather.

Yes, Paul Bunyan and Babe Are Part of the Appeal

Bemidji’s famous Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox are hard to miss. They give the city an instantly recognizable backdrop. It’s easy to imagine a movie character stopping for a photo before heading off to solve a festive misunderstanding.

But the city’s appeal isn’t limited to its oversized landmarks. The lakeside downtown and friendly locals help make Bemidji feel like the sort of place where a holiday story could happen. Hallmark may love a memorable establishing shot, but a Christmas town needs a community behind it, too.

The Holiday Celebration That Could Steal the Scene

If Hallmark’s search called for a big Christmas moment, Bemidji has one ready. The Night We Light Celebration brings families together for an evening that starts at Santa’s Workshop and builds toward a parade and lighting ceremony.

According to the town’s website, the event usually draws more than 10,000 spectators. That’s a crowd large enough to make the celebration feel like an occasion, whether you’re there for the lights, the activities or a chance to see Santa.

More Than a Million Lights, Plus One Enormous Gift Box

After the parade, more than one million lights sparkle during the lighting ceremony. The celebration also features what the town describes as the Midwest’s largest Christmas pixel tree and the world’s largest pixel gift box. They’re not subtle decorations, which is exactly the point.

Visitors can also enjoy s’mores, hot cocoa, ornament-making and sleigh rides. Firepits, vendors and fireworks add to the evening. A movie might save its grandest visual for the finale, but Bemidji offers plenty of spectacle for everyone to enjoy.

Christmas Here Is Bigger Than One Night

The Night We Light Celebration may provide the most dazzling images, but Bemidji’s holiday season doesn’t end when the lights come on. Other traditions give the community ways to join in throughout the festivities, from a run to downtown window displays.

That variety matters. A town can decorate beautifully, but it takes people taking part year after year to give those decorations a story.

Windows, Homes and Ways to Give Back

Bemidji’s seasonal events include the annual Reindeer Run, a downtown Christmas window display contest and a Tour of Homes. Together, they invite people to experience the holidays in different corners of the city, rather than watching one celebration from the sidelines.

The season also has a charitable side. Carts of Care collects toys and food for local families, while the Giving Ornament of Dreams connects visitors with local charities, according to the town’s website. The Holiday Light Exchange offers another way to give back. These efforts may be less flashy than a million lights, but they speak to the community spirit behind Bemidji’s Christmas appeal.

Could Minnesota Get Another Hallmark Christmas Movie?

Bemidji was one of 25 finalists in Hallmark’s contest, not an announced filming location. Public voting has ended, but being named a finalist still puts the city alongside places known for their holiday atmosphere.

Hallmark has filmed Christmas productions in Minnesota before. The state has already supplied settings for two of the channel’s holiday movies.

The State Has Been on Screen Before

Rescuing Christmas, released in 2023, was filmed in Duluth. Before that, Love Always, Santa, released in 2016, was filmed in Northfield. Bemidji could someday join that list, though being a contest finalist doesn’t guarantee a movie.

Minnesota’s Christmas-film connections extend beyond Hallmark. Duluth was a filming location for 2018’s Christmas Break-In, while 2020’s The Christmas Listing was filmed in Isanti, about an hour east of St. Cloud. And long before either of those, the 1996 holiday comedy Jingle All the Way, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, filmed in Minneapolis and Bloomington.

Why You Do Not Need to Wait for a Movie

The best part of Bemidji’s finalist status is that its holiday attractions are real. Visitors don’t need a film premiere to explore downtown, attend a celebration or pose with Paul and Babe. And at roughly two and a half hours north of St. Cloud, Bemidji is close enough for a Minnesota holiday getaway.

There are plenty of places to grab a bite while exploring, including the Cabin Cafe, Lazy Jack’s Bar & Grill, Bemidji Brewing, Paul Bunyan Sub Shop, Keg’n Cork Irish Pub and the Minnesota Nice Cafe. Honestly, a warm meal after an evening outside might be the most satisfying Christmas-movie moment of all.

Bemidji may or may not become the backdrop for a future Hallmark film. The contest has already shone a light on a city with beloved landmarks, ambitious festivities and neighbors who make room for others in the celebration. If that sounds like the heart of a holiday story, Bemidji has earned its place among the finalists.
