Kimberley Sustad’s Stunning Evolution From Theater to Hallmark Stardom
Kimberley Sustad makes falling in love on camera look effortless, but her path to becoming a Hallmark favorite has been anything but predictable. Before the Christmas romances, devoted fans known as the Susstuds, and award-winning screenplays, she took on demanding theater roles, drove across the border for tiny television appearances, and made a career gamble that paid off. She also worked through a surprising allergy, explored genres far removed from holiday romance, and helped create one of Hallmark’s most beloved franchises. Here’s how Sustad went from regional theater talent to a leading lady with real influence behind the scenes.
Her First Big Role Was Nothing Like a Hallmark Romance
Sustad’s acting roots go well beyond festive meet-cutes. At just 18, she took on the title role in Henrik Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler, a psychologically demanding drama about a dissatisfied aristocratic newlywed.
It was an ambitious start to her professional acting career. She later performed with companies including Seattle Repertory Theatre and the Arts Club Theatre, building her skills long before television audiences learned her name.
The Career Gamble That Changed Everything
As much as Sustad loved theater, making a living from it proved difficult. The Canadian American performer began pursuing screen work in Vancouver while still living in Seattle, making the drive for opportunities as small as a single line.
Those modest bookings slowly led to more. She appeared in the 2009 short Live Henry Live and the 2011 television comedy Thunderballs, then eventually moved to Vancouver as her screen career gained momentum.
Hallmark Came Calling Before She Became Its Leading Lady
By 2012, Sustad was building credits in Vancouver’s busy television industry. Her résumé grew to include Alcatraz, Primeval: New World, and Continuum, showing she could fit into very different fictional worlds.
She also appeared on Supernatural, playing Amanda Willer in the seventh-season episode Adventures in Babysitting. Years later, she returned as Betty in the season 15 episode Inherit the Earth.
Her Hallmark Debut Had a Behind-the-Scenes Twist
Sustad joined the Hallmark universe with 2012’s A Bride for Christmas. She played Vivian, sister to Arielle Kebbel’s Jessie, in a romantic comedy starring Andrew Walker as a man whose Christmas marriage challenge grows more complicated than expected.
But Vivian’s original characterization didn’t fully survive production. Sustad later told TV Goodness that the character had been written as openly gay, with a partner meant to appear in the final scene. According to her account, those elements were later toned down. It’s a revealing detail about an otherwise breezy holiday favorite.
The Movie That Made Fans Fall for Her Had One Uncomfortable Catch
Sustad’s breakthrough as a Hallmark leading lady came with 2014’s The Nine Lives of Christmas. Opposite Brandon Routh, she played veterinary student Marilee White, who connects with commitment-shy Zachary Stone with help from a stray cat.
The mix of romance, humor, and furry scene-stealers stuck with viewers. But Sustad was dealing with something they’d never have guessed from her relaxed performance: She is severely allergic to cats.
Yes, She Returned for Even More Cats
Sustad later joked to Media from the Heart that antihistamines might deserve some credit for her performance. The discomfort didn’t change her affection for cats, or the audience’s enthusiasm for Marilee and Zachary.
She and Routh reunited for The Nine Kittens of Christmas in 2021. The sequel brought back their chemistry and another irresistible collection of animals, giving longtime fans a welcome return to the story.
Anyone who knows Sustad only through Hallmark has missed a big part of her range. While establishing herself in romantic television movies, she kept taking roles in productions with sharper edges and higher stakes.
In 2015 and 2016, she played Kelly Hadler in CBC’s The Romeo Section. The acclaimed espionage series explored adult themes and won multiple honors, a striking contrast to her holiday work.
Science Fiction Gave Her Another Standout Role
On Travelers, Sustad played FBI Special Agent Joanne Yates, who stood between federal investigators and the central traveler team. The time-travel thriller starred Eric McCormack and MacKenzie Porter and ran from 2016 to 2018.
These roles make her career especially interesting. The warmth in her romantic performances is only one part of her toolkit; she can also bring authority and tension to stories without a Christmas tree in sight.
Her Biggest Hallmark Power Move Happened Behind the Camera
Sustad’s creative partnership with Paul Campbell opened a new chapter. After appearing together in 2018’s A Godwink Christmas, the pair collaborated on Christmas by Starlight, released in 2020.
They also starred in the film, about a lawyer trying to save her family’s diner and a developer who makes a deal with her. Made during the pandemic, it was Sustad’s first movie-writing collaboration with Campbell.
Then Came Three Brothers and a Baby
Their writing partnership reached another milestone with Three Wise Men and a Baby. Campbell, Tyler Hynes, and Andrew Walker starred as the Brenner brothers, whose unexpected childcare duties led to a story about family, friction, and connection.
Sustad and Campbell won a 2023 Leo Award for their screenplay. The film also inspired the follow-ups Three Wiser Men and a Boy and Three Wisest Men, and Sustad has teased the possibility of a fourth installment. She’s acknowledged the pressure of following a hit, while praising the natural rapport among the three stars.
Her Private Life Stays Private, but Her Career Keeps Expanding
Off-screen, Sustad has kept a much lower profile. She married entrepreneur Scot Sustad in 2004, and they welcomed twin daughters, Vienna Wild and Ari Royal, in June 2017.
There are signs that the marriage later ended, though Kimberley hasn’t publicly discussed a separation. A 2024 podcast description said Scot was navigating single life after a 17-year marriage, suggesting a split around 2022. Her current relationship status remains unclear.
What Comes Next for This Hallmark Favorite?
In August 2026, Sustad starred opposite Jesse Metcalfe in Absolutely Devoted to You, playing a television producer who connects with a former boy-band singer. Reactions to the plot were mixed, but viewers praised her appeal and chemistry with Metcalfe.
Next comes Snow Globe Town, scheduled for December 2026. With leading roles, award-winning writing, and genuine friendships across the network, Sustad has become much more than a familiar holiday face. Her evolution is still unfolding, and her next chapter looks well worth watching.
