Lori Loughlin is back in familiar Hallmark territory, but her return comes with more than a reunion. Her 17th Garage Sale Mysteries film puts Jennifer Shannon in the middle of a Lizzie Borden-inspired murder case, while Loughlin’s return to When Calls the Heart gives Abigail Stanton a secret to carry into Hope Valley. For viewers already looking ahead to the holidays, she also has a new Christmas movie with Tom Cavanagh on the way.

In a recent interview with Decider, Loughlin opened up about all three projects and why slipping back into these roles felt surprisingly easy.

Jennifer Shannon Is Back, and Her Latest Case Has a Famous Inspiration

Garage Sale Mysteries: Murder Takes the Stage brings Loughlin back as the bargain-hunting amateur detective she first played in 2013. This time, Jennifer’s true-crime book club is reenacting the infamous Borden murders when a murder of its own turns the gathering into an investigation.

The premise gives the franchise a recognizable historical mystery to play with, but Loughlin told Decider she knew less about the real case than viewers might expect. She remembered the childhood rhyme about Lizzie Borden, though some details she encountered through the film were new to her.

The Lizzie Borden Question Still Has No Easy Answer

Did working on the movie convince Loughlin that Borden was guilty or innocent? Not quite. She said the arguments on both sides left her unsure, much like Jennifer, whose enthusiasm for mysteries doesn’t give her a definitive answer about this one.

That uncertainty, Loughlin suggested, is precisely why people keep returning to the case. Borden wasn’t found guilty, and questions about what happened and what the motive might have been continue to invite debate.

The timing also gave the Hallmark movie an unexpected pop-culture connection: Ryan Murphy’s Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story arrived on Netflix the same week. According to Loughlin, the overlap was a coincidence. The team had no idea the two releases would land so close together.

Why Returning After Seven Years Felt So Natural

Seventeen films is an impressive run for any screen character, and Loughlin sounded almost startled by the number. Still, the gap since her last Garage Sale Mysteries outing didn’t make Jennifer difficult to find again. She described standing on set and struggling to believe seven years had passed.

Much of that ease came from reuniting with the people who helped make the series feel like itself. Sarah Strange, who has been part of the franchise since its first movie, returned, as did Kevin O’Grady, who plays Detective Frank Lynwood.

Loughlin had kept in touch with both actors while they were apart, but working together again offered something different from a text or an occasional lunch.

It Was More Than a Cast Reunion

In the Decider interview, Loughlin compared the experience to reconnecting with close friends after a long stretch apart: the time disappears, and the familiar rhythm comes back. She also praised director Paula Elle, who was new to the franchise, for bringing enthusiasm to the production.

That balance of familiarity and fresh energy matters to a series built on relationships as much as clues. Jennifer’s friendship with Frank includes a recurring tension: she gets in the way of his police work, but he also recognizes that her instincts can help him.

Loughlin sees Jennifer’s marriage to Jason, played by Steve Bacic, as another part of the appeal. It’s not presented as perfect, she said, but its foundation of love and trust gives viewers a family to return to between investigations.

For Loughlin, the formula isn’t about making murder frightening. The mysteries are engaging without being too scary, and the characters give families a reason to watch together. The case may bring viewers in, but the people keep them coming back.

Abigail Stanton Returns to Hope Valley With a Secret

Loughlin’s other Hallmark homecoming has a different kind of mystery. She is reprising Abigail Stanton on When Calls the Heart, and her comments about Season 14 suggest Abigail won’t immediately tell everyone what’s happening in her life.

Loughlin was careful not to reveal the secret itself. She did say Abigail returns to Hope Valley and takes some time before confiding in Elizabeth, played by Erin Krakow. That guarded entrance is unusual for the character, which makes it an intriguing way to reintroduce her.

Coming Home Does Not Mean Everything Is Settled

Abigail will reconnect with the town and find her footing again, Loughlin explained, even as she keeps part of her story private. Viewers can expect the warmth of a homecoming, then, without assuming that Abigail’s next chapter will be entirely straightforward.

Offscreen, the return meant another reunion for Loughlin. She said seeing her castmates again was a dream come true and praised writer Joy Gregory for stories that make room for drama, fun, silliness and romance.

Loughlin didn’t offer a full roadmap for Abigail’s Season 14 arc, but she made clear that the character’s secret will matter to how she settles back into Hope Valley.

Her Christmas Movie With Tom Cavanagh Was Years in the Making

As if two returning roles weren’t enough, Loughlin also has a Hallmark Christmas movie, What If Christmas, coming in October. She stars opposite Tom Cavanagh, whom she praised as a funny and generous performer. The project is especially personal to her because she helped shepherd the story toward the screen.

Loughlin said the idea began years ago with a script by her friend Kara. Although it was originally written for a younger couple, Loughlin saw a story worth developing. The movie didn’t move forward at the network she was working with at the time, but she kept thinking about it.

The Idea Finally Found Its Hallmark Home

When the opportunity to make a Hallmark Christmas film came together, Loughlin revisited the project with producer Brad Krevoy. Kara worked on the script, and another writer polished it later. The film was made, and Loughlin described it as heartwarming and fun, with a slightly unusual touch that still fits the Christmas-movie tradition.

For Hallmark viewers, that adds up to a busy stretch: a new Jennifer Shannon mystery, an Abigail Stanton return with a question mark attached, and a holiday film Loughlin has wanted to make for years. The reunions may have drawn her back, but each project gives her something new to bring along.
