Ryan Paevey Says He Was Struggling Before He Left Hollywood

To viewers, Paevey’s career looked enviable. He’d spent years as Nathan West on General Hospital and become a familiar face in romantic movies. But in a new interview with Us Weekly, the 41-year-old described a very different experience inside his Los Angeles apartment.

He said the entertainment industry can be psychologically difficult, pointing to rejection and intrusions into his privacy. Even before his mother’s cancer diagnosis, Paevey was unhappy in the city. He spent too much time shut away at home and was living in a way he didn’t consider healthy. He described himself as reclusive and depressed.

A Family Health Scare Made the Need for Change More Urgent

His mother was diagnosed with cancer around the time he decided to step away from Hollywood in spring 2024. Paevey hasn’t described her illness as the sole reason for his break; by his account, he was already struggling. But it added a serious family concern to the work pressures he’d been carrying.

His response was practical and sweeping. He left Los Angeles for San Diego, where he now lives a few miles from his mother. He spent more time outdoors, exercised and put energy into Fortunate Wanderer, the jewelry business he runs alongside acting. He also embraced the slower pleasures of his new home, joking that his garden has made him the neighborhood hobbit.

For Paevey, the move was more than a change of scenery. He wanted a different address, new surroundings and a different daily rhythm. Looking back, he told Us Weekly that making so many changes felt cleansing and healing.

His 2024 Break Followed a Candid Warning to Fans

Paevey didn’t disappear from acting without an explanation. In April 2024, after roughly two decades in entertainment, he announced that he was burned out and wouldn’t be working on anything new that year. His Instagram message conveyed deep frustration with what he characterized as false friendships and promises that had gone nowhere.

Some fans were concerned, and Paevey addressed the announcement in an interview with Heavy two months later. He said the industry hadn’t felt like the right place for him for some time and that his mental health had suffered. He also said Hollywood had become a dark place for him and brought out a version of himself he didn’t like.

He Also Spoke About Financial Trouble—and Gratitude

At the time, Paevey said his bank accounts had been hacked and his money embezzled. Those were his descriptions of what happened, and they were part of a difficult period that also included his mother’s diagnosis. Together, the pressures help explain why stepping away felt necessary rather than impulsive.

Still, he was careful not to dismiss his entire career. Paevey expressed gratitude to General Hospital for giving him a chance as a new actor and to Hallmark for opportunities that changed his life. He drew a distinction between appreciating the work and recognizing that the way he was living and working had become unsustainable.

What Brought Paevey Back to Acting?

The first step back came in September 2025, when Paevey reprised his role as Nathan on General Hospital. It was a familiar place to return after spending time focused on his jewelry business and life in San Diego. Eventually, more scripts and film offers came his way, including projects with Great American Media.

Paevey told Us Weekly that both financial and motivational reasons played a part in his decision to work again. At first, the calm of his new routine was welcome. After a while, though, he grew restless. Reading scripts helped him realize he was ready to take on another project.

Two Christmas Movies Are Bringing Him Back to Rom-Coms

Fans who missed Paevey in holiday romances will soon have two chances to see him again. He stars in Great American Media’s Christmas at Moose Lake and The Ornament Library, both scheduled for the 2026 holiday season.

Now that offers are coming in again, Paevey sounds eager to work. He told Us Weekly that he genuinely likes it and doesn’t think he’ll ever retire. His break may not have been an ending at all. It gave him the chance to leave a life that was wearing him down and come back to acting on different terms.
